Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA)

The PEPA program has hit the ground running with 4 Darwin based clinical placements so far this year and 6 further placements scheduled over the next 3 months. The program has also delivered workshops at Menzies, Juninga aged Care and Tennant creek and has started planning for up and coming Workshops/Education at Groote Eylandt, Alice Springs and Palmerston/Casuarina community Care.

In other news:

  • PEPA NT attended an Indigenous round table held in Canberra and hosted by Palliative Care Australia (PCA) in February. The round table saw PCA staff and Aboriginal representatives from organisations all over Australia come together to discuss the allocation of PCA funding for Palliative Care Projects and resources that have an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus, 12 key projects were highlighted, planning and implementation will take place over the 2017/2020 period.
  • PEPA NT, PCA, Territory Palliative Care and Angurugu Clinic Staff have been working together with the Groote Eylandt local Community planning the creation of a documentary that will highlight the success and commitment of the local community to embrace Advanced Care Planning and Palliative Care, the documentary will explore the communities journey and promote the methods that have created a real sense of local ownership over Palliative Care issues. Filming is scheduled to take place 9th -13th April and I have no doubt the Documentary will be a valuable resource into the future
  • PEPA has been working closely with the Allan Walker Cancer Centre around a program that is aimed at delivering Cancer Care training to Chronic Disease Coordinators from all over the territory. The education is accredited Certificate 4 level training conducted by Central Australia Remote Health Development Service and the NT Cancer Service Network at Royal Darwin Hospital. PEPA will be engaged to deliver education sessions that will focus on Aboriginal Culture and in particular the barriers to care for Aboriginal People.
